Would someone please talk me through how to UNDO an excel 'read only' doc. I made it 'read only' when emailing it and now cannot undo it to work on it again. Following the EXCEL HELP instructions has not helped. 'Idiot speak' instructions most acceptable! obliged.

Right Click on the file in Windows. Un-Check the "read only" box. Click OK.

:)

If you are talking about the "read only" settings in Excel itself, did you assign a password when you made it read only? -- Did you use the "protection" settings under Tools?

Hi Bron, neither of those options sound familiar to me. I'm afraid, I didn't pay much attention when I found a way to save it as 'read only'! Any other ideas, please? Thanks for your help so far.

Does it let you edit the spreadsheets at all? Do you get a prompt saying "this file is read only" when you attempt to save it OR when you try and edit a cell?

Yep! Bron, that's exactly was it says!

I asked which of the above it's doing -- but due to your excitement I guess you are confirming it is saying this :

"FILE NAME is read-only" To save a copy click OK, then give the workbook a new name in the Save As dialog box"

If it IS saying this, read the instructions in my first post, that will sort the issue.

What version of Excel are you using.
If you are using 2007, its different.
Use the Excel help its easy
