Just replacing a ceiling rose to take a new light fitting and spotted this buried behind the other cables. Just loose and the ends chopped. Just wondering what it could be. Any ideas? Its just two core Black and Red...

original house cabling most likely
they used to clip it to the joist and so near impossible to remove usually the ends are chopped level and tucked up in to the ceiling

Ah OK that does make sense as I flashed a light in the hole and it was clipped to the joist above. I believe my house was rewired a good 20 or so years ago, what year would that sort of cabling been done? No earthing?

Shuss you will upset "duncanhead" I am sure like most electrical work there was some overlap but really Pre-War. At least my dad's house built 1954 had earths to lights but my grandfather's house built between the wars did not.

It's twin rubber insulated cable. The same stuff my house was wired in.

My house was built in about 1958

That old twin cable is 3/029. used for really prehistoric lighting circuits - no earth included, you will recognise it by its brittle insulation, and the three tinned copper strands that make up each of the conductors.

Earthing on lighting circuits has only been mandatory since 1966.

Ref: "Older installation work" section in the Part P document..probably the most interesting section of the whole tome...

Ah, cheers for those nuggets of information! :D
