Unsure how to use tile hooks , advice needed please

Ok , I've got a problem that I need help with please , I've got all the gear but no idea I've ,bought the hooks to replace a few damaged tiles

, started doing this today , removed old tile no problem , however broke a few in doing so , this is my problem , there seem to be 3 layers of tiles on my roof , when I remove the tile the gap between the two below tiles has a slate below it , therefore if I nail a hook into the gap it cracks the below slate , what should I be hammering into ? , any help would be appreciated, thanks
