Erm dont think moz was  but afraid I was serious, it really did occur. Because the freezer switch never got turned off it didn't show up till I turned it off. It had over a period of time slowly melted the inside of switch and the red insulation was yuk. Not saying this is your prob but if you dont find any rats try sniffing round your plugs/switches.

Or have you recently laid vinyl flooring onto quarry tiles making em sweat :!:

Here goes.

My fridge/freezer is plugged in to switch on the wall behind it (this the one your talking about?), only gaining access by moving the fridge. Additional switch at accessible point on wall allowing it to be switched on and off. Switched the accessible one on and off, everything seems fine. Will check the other tomorrow.

Now hoping that it is a rodent, had mice before so there is a change.

If it is the electrics, what's involved in the repairs?

Thanks, i haven't the foggiest when it comes to stuff like this.

Actually I'm only a decorator you reallly need to ask in electrics for the proper way. But the fact that switches are still operating does'nt mean all is ok. (gawd think i got you worried now) If you suspect smell is coming from electrics, switch off main and check that each socket outlet or switche wiring is not loose where it connects into socket. Could also be w/m etc. Dont worry though I'm sure this is not your prob.

Was it a mouse, was it electrics?

No, it was the condensation pan under the fridge, soft cheesey looking stuff, not very much of it but it was a horrendous smell.

Think a regular check and clean of this is in order.

Anyone know what causes this and how to prevent it?

Cheers for your help guys.

I do!

The fridge has a condenser plate on the back that gets cold, and condensation/frost form on it.

When the fridge is cool enough the thermostat turns it off, and it comes back to fridge temp, so the frost melts and runs down into a drip tray. A small pipe takes this through the back of the fridge into a plastic dish above the motor. the heat of the motor evaporates it.

If you let food touch the evaporator plate, then, instead of clean condensation, there will be contamination of food particles or spillage going into the warm dish. Now you know, just avoid it. shelves usually have a lip to prevent objects being pushed back too far.
NB don't make the mistake i once did, of trying to wash out and rinse the dish in position - I got water in the electronic starter (bang)

I had thought of the condensation pan and they always say thats the first thing to check, but I've never heard of it being the culprit until now, glad you got it sorted.
very disappointed it wasnt my mouse

Hiya guys

Just read this from the beginning and was going to suggest the drip tray but then saw that you'd found it was

My old fridge used to do this all the time, minging thing  I used to leave a tiny drop of Milton fluid in it to try and neutralise the smell and remember to clean it out regularly too :)

Moz, thanks for the advise. After 9 yrs away from servicing, I really am wondering whether I want to look at modern temperamental boilers! I used to enjoy a days servicing, just seems more hassle now. Going S/E doing this means loads of phone calls/planning in/ call backs/parts etc. I quite like tiling, fitted my own kitchen, and mums, got 2 bathrooms to do soon. Do you think the ball has started rolling? Present job seems really stressful for £10:50 p/h, in winter working 8 til 6:30/7, no lunch, blub, blub

Brightness, typical woman, chipping in at the end and saying 'I knew that all along!!!!'

:D

Milk, no sugar ta.

I usually chip in at the beginning hahaha. The amount of times I've told hubby something and then he's claimed it as his own idea hahaha

Kids think it's hilarious now and just pull this 'yeah right Dad' face!

Brightness, I'll never forget when my old ford escort was playing up [20 yrs ago!]. I spent ages fiddling with it one day [not a mechanic, me], the wife [then girlfreind] brought me a cup of tea, and said " what's that pipe hanging off there?" Well turns out it was the vacuum advance [you wouldn't understand :D ] , so I pushed it back on, car went perfect. Women eh.

Hubby calls times like that 'team working'.... makes him feel better!!
