UPDATING TIMER AND THERMOSTAT

How difficult is it to update a central heating timer and thermostat. The current timer has the sliders for the on/off times and I want to update to an electronic version.
 
It's usually pretty easy, plus a lot of new programmers are able to use the old backing plate so you might not even have to re-wire it. A plumbers merchant will be able to help you.
