We've had several locksmiths out paying a small fortune over the years but whenever we have hot weather the door starts to play up!

The door is catching against the frame and we are having to exert a lot of force to lift the handle up in order to lock the door, to the point where I think we'll end up breaking something!

Does anyone how I can fix this?

Does the metal strip/strike plates on the frame need adjusting or the door hinges? Or both!?

Pic of hinge attached

This is an older version of the new Trojan patriot plus hinge, to move the door sideways then adjust the allen bolt you've exposed on the side, try only adjusting the top and middle hinge leaving the door to pivot on the bottom hinge. As a service engineer myself I always explain that I need to find a happy medium between being able to lift the handle, to leave enough room along the edge to account for expansion and not too much that when it shrinks in winter that you have a gap, this is the difference between a locksmith and a window/door doctor type service engineer

So all i need to do is adjust the allen bolt, given that the door is catching against the frame and difficult to engage the lock I will need to adjust the bolt clockwise?

I do hope this works I'm at my wits end, looking at the metal strip, the strike plates are all over the place, they are not all in the same position, is that how they should be?

Yes if it's just as simple as it catching the frame along the lock side, turn the allen bolt anti clockwise as though you were undoing it and it moves the door sideways i.e to the left as we're looking at it.

As for the strike plates being all over the place we'll can't help there as I can't see them from here but usually they're all adjusted independently to achieve the desired result and will often be in different positions, you have a brown rosewood door and I'll put my house on it that it's warped from the sun so having striker plates in different positions is normal

I'll give it a go, making small adjustments as I go and test it as I go along, will report back.

Didn't realise until later that rosewood coloured doors are notoriously problematic when it gets hot. White doors never had a problem!

Many thanks!

Any colour even white although white does reflect heat the most, at the other end of the scale you have swartz black, when going to Spain you don't wear black do you!

True!

I think the door has dropped, hence why it is catching, how can you adjust the height?

Height adjustment is from underneath the frame part of the hinge, there's a hinged cap that flicks down , from memory I think there an allen bolt, turning it lifts the door, not seen these hinges in over ten years so could be mistaken

Edit. It's quicker to post a video to be honest

Had a look, the bottom is just for compression

Need to adjust height approx 10 -15mm what would be the past way to do this? Can you add packers to the hinge?

That's a lot, there wouldn't be that much height adjustment in the hinge, does the door need to be lifted on the hinge side or the handle side?

I'd say the hinge side, as soon as I lift the door it engages and locks fine, otherwise it doesn't lock.

Thinking to either pack the hinge or lower the striker plate

Surely you mean lift the striker because if you want to lift the hinge side then the handle side will lift too so the striker needs to go up as much and a bit more on top.

To be perfectly honest I think you need to get a window/door doctor/service engineer to look at this door because from what you're describing it seems the doors all over the place

As I can't raise the height of the door, I need to lower the striker plate so it aligns with the door.

Raising the striker plate won't work as I can't adjust the door

Update

Lowered the striker plate strip approx 7mm, door now locks perfectly!

If you're hinge doesn't have height adjustment this could be a solution for others that may encounter a similar issue
