UPVC door handle - no bolts through door?

Hi all,
I’ve looked for other threads on this but can’t see one. My (old) UPVC door has a brass handle that I wanted to change to white - cosmetic reasons only - it works.

The door locking mechanism is different to what I’ve experienced before. You don’t raise the handle to lock. You simple turn the key two rotations and the locking mechanism opens and closes. Old school but works fine. However the handles are not bolted together through the door, like modern handles but just screwed to the door itself (and little grub screws gripping the spindle through the door).

The position of everything matches modern day standard handle BUT when I removed the handle and started to investigate drilling through the door to allow the handles to bolt together I’ve hit steel. I can see much as I don’t want to open up the screw holes which would mean I couldn’t put the old handles back if I fail.

So the question is, can I source handles like these (but white) and what would I search for OR can I drill through the steel in the door (this feels like there would be no going back if I started it).

Thanks for your help. Never posted here - normally just find what I need on others posts. See pics showing what handle looks like in place and the existing screws holding it in place.
