Hello...my grandmother had a upvc conservatory/porch fitted by a local firm in yorkshire last year. She requires extra keys for the door so she went to her local key cutters who cut her a key which she tried in the door. After finding that the key does not work she contacted the key cutting shop who told her that she must have a 'special key' that can only be supplied by the company that fitted the conservatory??

It appears that this company has since disolved therefore impossible to use them as a route of enquiry.

Is what the key cutting shop saying likely or are they covering up bad workmanship?

(sorry not more detailed on the locking system but I've not had chance to look closely at the construction)

many thanks for your advice

My advice is:

1. Call a locksmith.
and:
2. In future don't buy uPVC products from fly-by-night companies.

may also be the key only cut 99% right.
if the key fits in the key hole its the right profile key, but as i said may not have been cut or trimmed right.

other thing is you may be able to get a diffent keyy barrel or comeplete lock for said door.

we have a bloke round here that specialises in paddy o door problems, i.e new locks spares etc, perhaps there is one near you

The lock is quite likely made by some trade manufacturer of locks. See if there is a brand name on the key or the lock. Conservatory installerers are not known for fitting specialised locks.

It is very likely a Eurolock cylinder. These are fairly easy to take out and replace (if necessary with another brand) as long as you have at least one working key.

However it also seems quite likely to me that the key is cut slightly inaccurately. See if it works if jiggled a bit. Hold it up to the light against an original key and see if you can detect any inaccuracy.

I have had the same problem in the past and was told the same by the person who cut the key. I found later he was talking rubbish. I went to another key cutter and he cut me another key and it worked fine. He told me that it was the blank that the first peron used. He should have used a blank for UPVC door locks, not the regular yale front door key blanks. I recomend you try another key cutter first. Make sure you show hime the keys the other person cut.
