hi folks,
I have a desktop with 2 usb ports at the back. I'd like to get an extension that would allow me to put the usb ports on top of the computer for easier access. While I'm at it, I would like to have a couple of more ports too. The thing is, I don't know what to go for. I have USb 2 and have seen a couple of extensions in PC world, but with so many to chose from I'm not sure which one is best. Also, they all seem to come with a mains plug. The chap said I would have to plug it in or I would not get USB 2 speed. Is this right? I have a single extension, that gives me USB 2, and that is not mains plugged.

I think you will find what you want is a 2 or even 4 port USB hub such as these:

or this

Just plug one into the rear usb port and place on top of computer. You do not need to plug into mains as they are powered from the PC USB :D .

Alternative is if you have a free drive bay in PC you could install front mounting kit such as:
