Yes should have measured first. Bad mistake....

What are my chances of success trying to make hole in the metal bigger?
Step drill bit or reamer?

Or give up, fill in the hole I've made and try again with smaller bolts?

You should be able to put a drill of suitable size through the holes easily enough.

12mm for a tv.
forget the hole you drilled and buy appropriate fixings.

Trouble is it fell off the wall once, then I tried those gripit fittings. Load of crap..... Just pulled out the plasterboard.

Yeh 12mm probably overkill but I wanted to make sure this time. Drilled into the brick etc. The bolts are in pretty solid now.
Trouble is the holes are there, bolts are in now - in hindsight of course, 10mm would be better.

should be easy enough to drill out a 10mm to 12mm if you have a good drill/bit - have you used resign in the wall holes ?

resign?

trouble is its an oblong shaped hole and the drill bit just seems to catch....

talk about going round the houses.
what a load of bodgers.

Run your drill in reverse to make a good impression on the slot then go forwards to drill the hole.
