I need to partially repoint the mortar in my wall, so I need to remove about 20 metres (x 5mm?) in length.

Just for this job, I had thought of buying a cheap "Energer" 4.5 inch £19.99 angle grinder from Screwfix plus a 115mm mortar rake disc for it.

Is it likely that this small tool will be up to the job or should I buy 9" angle grinder / 230mm disc ?

For a 20 meter run I would personally use a hash and mortar chasing chisel, not a grinder. To much can go wrong with grinder blades jamming and kicking back in the hands of the inexperienced, believe me I've seen it...pinenot

A small angle grinder is fine, we use Makita with the mortar raking bits with no problems.
( looks a bit like a router bit ) and screws directly to the spindle.
With the disc you wont get tight into the perps without cutting the brickwork.
