OK, it has been suggested I should add some X100 to my system. Question - do I simply crawl into the loft, lob it into the header tank and run the system and hope that it circulates? Or do I need to drain water out of the header, add the stuff etc? Or something else that I haven't thought of ...

Any tips? I'm new to this stuff as you can tell :)

It's unlikely to mix throughout the system any time soon if you just lob it into the header tank.

I would start by switching off the boiler and tying up the header tank ball valve so it can't refill. Then drain water from the system equivalent to the contents of the header tank plus the pipe down to the boiler plus remove a few extra litres just for luck. :)
When the sentinel is added to the header tank it will then go straight to where it's needed.

Untie the ball valve etc.....

If you happen to have a towel rail just isolate and drain that off. Then when you connect it back up; undo one of the nuts off the top and fill it from there with your x100.

Thanks for the help.

I can't find any drain points for the system as such, all our piping is in the walls. However, the downstairs rads each have a point by the valve, opened by the bleed key - I assume I can use any one of these?

Also, is there anything I need to do before taking water out of the system to protect the pump or valves etc?

unless the system is new or has recently been drained/flushed it would be advisable to flush it first (drain completely, refill, drain completely refill) just to remove and loose bits of crap/ inhibit clean water rather than dirty water, now rather than having to do it later and waste your inhibitor!!
