My friend has just completed on a property that was bought at auction.

She has the front door key only.

She has not got the keys for the french doors (UVPC) at the rear of the property (currently locked), or keys for any of the double glazed windows (7 in total, all locked).

Qu:Can the door and/ or window locks be replaced by a diy'er? or will I need to get a locksmith out - I'm thinking the door will be especially tricky for a diy'er.

Qu: Is the only solution to fit new locks on the doors and windows, or is there another (and cheaper) way around this?

Qu:Worst case scenario whats a ball park figure for sorting a) The door out b) The windows out (midlands area if that makes a difference)

Appreciate any comments

she should start by asking the previous occupiers to give her all the keys.

if no response she might mention it again when they ask her to send on their post.

For the windows, photograph the window locks and post on here. Someone will recognise them. If any of the neighbours have identical window locks she can ask to borrow or photograph their key (after checking that it fits) and get one to match. Window keys are easily available online.

The back door will need to be opened, preferably non-destructively by a locksmith.

Changing the cylinder on the front door is very easy but she can ask the locksmith to do it on his visit.

She might consider asking for both doors to be fitted with a cylinder that can be opened using the same key. It is a convenient touch.

Asking the previous owner is not an option - it was a probate sale, owner is deceased.

Any idea of the ball park costs for the back door?
