My carpet is at least 12 years old (it was there when I moved in) and recently my vacuum has managed to pick up a huge amount of carpet fibres each time I use it. My thoughts are that the vacuum is at fault rather than just the carpet falling apart, unless anyone knows better?
The vacuum has a manually adjusted dial for three different height settings and also a separate 'hardfloor adaptor' which you clip onto the head to raise the brush bar even higher. The height adjustment dial setting seems to change the brush bar height a miniscule amount, maybe a 1mm, is that normal? I think something has gone wrong with the vacuum and the brush bar is so low it's destroying the carpet. It's a Vax upright. The bar isn't so low that it slows down on contact with the carpet.
My only other thought is that maybe the carpet is at the end of its life (I thought they wore through rather than falling apart though) or the carpet has had some kind of insect eating away at it?! I know moths like to eat natural fibres but I haven't seen more than two in the house.
