I have had a few problems with our vaillant 242 and also some success but i'm a bit stuck now and just could do with some input - I would be very grateful. Details:
- Boiler has worked fine with no noticeable problems until about 3 weeks ago. It stopped igniting suddenly. Followed the flow chat and ended up at the flame supervision board.
- Replaced flame supervision board and no change. I noticed a bust capacitor on the fan control board - replaced it and refitted. Boiler ignites and flames come on.
- Within about 1 minute of this, the boiler starts shutting off and re-igniting in a cycle. I released a bit of water from the central heating system to drop the pressure a wee bit and this problem went away.
- Heating came on and rads all heating up nicely - worked like this for an hour or so but I noticed that the flames never reached their full whack - the flames remained on the low level.
- Went back to the flow chart and ended up concluding it must be the diaphragm pump or gas valve I think but it was late and i was a bit fed up so I noticed a few posts saying that the white elbows on the diaphragm pump often crack. Seemed easy enough to check so I did this, both were cracked. Removed them and hooked the hoses straight onto the connectors and put the thing back together.
- Now, when it gets to that point (where the large flames should come on) it shuts off and the red light comes on. It continues to do this every time.
SO, as i seem to have gone backwards rather than forwards I'm wondering if it must be one of these three things:
1 - I've hooked the hoses back on the wrong way - can anyone tell me what this would do - I'm more than happy to test this out but I'm about 90% sure they are right and I'm wondering what would happen if I swap them to check, only to find I had got them right the first time.
2 - Now that there are no cracks in the system, there is some kind of pressure issue. Any advice on this would be welcome.
3 - I have knocked something else whilst doing this job (I was very careful)
So, basically, my plan was to reverse the hoses and try it but I can't do this till tonight - basically, it's been driving me mad for about 3 weeks and I don't have much confidence in the flow chart because it has already failed me. Does anyone have any other ideas or thoughts that I could try - I would be most grateful.
Regards, Ken
