We are currently having plenty of work done on a house and we are considering a Vaillant EcoTEC 937 but before we take the plunge we'd like to know how much a replacement heat exchanger is likely to cost. We live in a hard water area and had to replace one on our old Vaillant TurboMax (which wasn't too expensive).

We currently have a water softener installed in the house and basically want to work out if it's worth keeping it...

Any rough idea gratefully received...

I think you are getting muddled between the main HE and the plate HE.

It should not happen but its only the plate HE which can get lime scaled on the secondary side.

Most boiler problems are oxide dirt in the primary of the plate. That can be cleaned as can the lime scale.

The 937 is generally reliable but you must check the characteristics will suit your needs and that the mains flow rate is adequate.

OP, on this boiler you will need to look into HW heat exchanger as well as the storage tanks. Mains water passes through the HWHE as well as the cylinder. If the Vaillant Turbo needed a new plate heat exchanger than it is posible 937 might need the tank and HWHE looked at sometime in the future. No doubt someone living in relatively hard water area might shed more light on the subject.

I would consider keeping the water softener is essential for a combi boiler in a hard water area.

But do not use the softened water for the heating side of the boiler.

Guys, thanks for all the tips!

We went for the 937 in the end and it's working like a dream; loads of hot water and efficient heating.

Given the comments, we'll get the tank and the HE checked out at its first service to keep an eye on them.
