Happy new year!

I have an old but good Vaillant Vantage 150 cylinder, it's literature says it can only be matched to a Vaillant boiler?

I also have a Worcester Greenstar R18 boiler and would like to use this, ihave all of the appropriate controls and kit with the cylinder installed.

Can someone advise if there is a good (ie not just commercial) reason why Vaillant would exclude other manufacturers kit?

At this time of year I could do without the expense of a new cylinder!

(I'm pretty sure the last boiler supplying it wasn't a vaillant?)

The install will be by a RGS mate but I want to be sure from a safety perspective before pressing on.
Thanks

I can't see why you can't use Vantage cylinder on any gas boiler, to me it just a unvented cylinder.

Maybe other might know why?

Maybe a marketing plot to get you to use Vaillant boiler?

Daniel.

Under no circumstances can u use a vantage cylinder except with a vaillant boiler. The over heat safety devices are built in the boiler not the cylinder. Hence they comes as a pair. Normal unvented cylinders carry their own overheat protection built in so they can be used with any boiler

Thanks for the response...
I'm puzzled by the the idea that the cylinder has no overheat protection built-in? It does have a 'temperature and pressure relief valve' fitted to the DHW outlet and a Vaillant specific immersion heater incorporating an energy cut-out device (only to be genuine Vaillant part). The cylinder is also fitted with a thermostat which regulates DHW temperature - which isolates the cylinder (via the 3 port valve) when temperature is achieved. The usual potable expansion vessel and mains pressure check and relief devices are also supplied.

The boiler incorporates an overheat stat and pressure relief valve also.

What safety mechanism is absent?

What do other manufacturers cylinders include that Vaillant haven't in this one?

I am not an expert, just a reasonably proficient builder, as said I don't want to take any chances regards safety....

Please forgive any ignorance on my part...

I think Bunnyman is saying that there's no energy cut-out on the thermostat fitted to the cylinder for the boiler side of things

Additionally, a 3-port valve is insufficient protection for unvented cylinders - they MUST have a two-port zone valve fitted for proper protection

OP, without wanting to sound rude, your last post clearly demonstrates you have not understood the rules governing unvunvented cylicylinders.

ReadRead the sparesspares booklbooklet for the cycylinder andand then section 6 ofof the manuamanual.

Thanks for the rapid responses

I revisited the install manual for both the cylinder and the boiler,
I still don't see anything missing from the 'required' safety kit and I don't understand the 2 port vs 3 port (as supplied with the cylinder) contention?

Am I missing something?

From the install manual -

"6.4 Secondary System
The VANTAGE is provided with all necessary safety and control devices for unvented DHW operation"

Of course the manual also specifies that the cylinder must only be used with Vaillant boilers - I have no warranty at stake.

Perhaps a little knowledge is a dangerous thing, as opposed to ignorance (on my part)!!??

Still not sure of any reason why this might be an unsafe install?

Cheers all

You have asked and been given the answer by 3 specialists, if you dont want to take it thats fine

What he said

If you don't install it as the manufacturer intended and Building Regulations require, you risk the house it's in ending up looking like this

Can you tell me where the cylinder's overheat protection and energy cut off is please? For a clue - Vaillant Document 83 39 21 GB01. ;) The fact you quoted 6.4 of all things is a good testament to your lack of understanding.

Why do you feel the need to argue? Especially with Bunnyman - factory trained IIRC.

You say a warranty is not at stake. How about insurance? Life and limbs? Professionalism? I'll let you tell me about bricks if you let us tell you about unvented hot water.

Thanks to all,
As per my earlier input, I am seeking to act safely and within the regs!
Looks like a rethink & spend is required.

Thanks to all who responded.

Anyone want a cheap Vaillant 150 cylinder?
(its heavy and only works with Vaillant boilers)!!!

Gents,
Calm down!
I am not arguing with anyone nor challenging their knowledge!
I sought to understand something technical with the potential for danger.
I have the answer and I'm grateful.
I thought that was one of the reasons for the site.
Apologies if some felt I was hostile!

Have a prosperous and happy new year

I did think to offer, but having availed myself of the documents again the performance isn't up to scratch for me anyway.

False economy I'm afraid.
