Can anyone tell me what this valve is for on our hearth next to the fireplace as Google isn't coming up with any answers?

I will wager that is a gas valve from when a gas fire was fitted (or perhaps in case a gas fire was to be fitted)

Suggest you don't do anything to it and re-post this in the PLUMBING and HEATING section so a proper Gas expert can give you better advice.

Thanks. Suspected it was gas, but really didn't want to mess around with it to confirm. Should have posted a picture of the fireplace in its entirety. It's an original cast iron insert, with absolutely no evidence of anything but solid fuel having been used.

Looks like a gas valve to me too. The side without the screw would have been the feed to the fire, and AFAIK it should have a cap (it's unclear from the pic whether it has one or not).

Gas Fire feed valve, if you are not going to reuse it get a Gas engineer in to cap it off, it may still be live.

It definitely is a gas valve and the open threaded section should be capped and gas tight.

Those valves do not always remain gas tight after time, nor always when new!

It's what's called a Restrictor elbow, a valve for isolating a gas appliance.

As everyone mentions, there would have been a pipe running from that to a gas appliance within the hearth.

Again, as everyone mentions, it needs to be checked to see if it's been disconnected or capped off by your local smiley registered gas chap.

May well have been a gas poker attached to it in the distant past if there
is no evidence of a gas fire been fitted.

As others have said get it checked out by a registered gas bod and have
the outlet plugged or removed and capped under the floor.
