varnishing slate?

I've just had some natural slate tiles laid in my fireplace. They are mainly grey with some rusty colours which is the rustic look I was after. When they are wet it does bring out the colours so my friend who laid them suggested I varnish them with clear matt varnish to get the same effect.

I'm just wondering if varnish is the right stuff to use or will this ruin them?

Thanks in advance.

use wd40 thats what i use!

brings them up well.

though you have to do it after every time you light the fire.

Thanks guys. I already have those in my shed so will test some out on a spare broken tile.

The fire in there is a flame effect electric fire so maybe I won't need to redo the tiles.

Thanks for those tips!
