So, long story short is we are going to upgrade our velux windows in a partial loft conversion rebuild and upgrade.

At the moment we are unsure if we will replace with the same size. We might opt to replace with something that’s thinner but longer. Meaning that the existing hole that’s been cut in the roof felt will need to be patched, or partially patched to conform to the new window size.

Can anyone help with some advice on what materials/techniques I should use todo this correctly?

A less wide Velux is better (structurally) than a wider one, in terms of disruption etc. As long as the original is correctly trimmed out, then adding a reducing timber and altering the header trimmers is all you'll likely need.

The reason people put the landscape skylights in, is because they are restricted by purlins in my experiance,
So check this before ordering.

If you've scope to make longer why not leave the width the same: less work
