Hi there.

I am having my dining room carpet lifted this week & a laminate floor laid. The floor currently has a vent in it which has a grille over it. The floor fitter mentioned that he would just cover over it when he lays the floor, but I'm not so sure, surely it is there for a purpose.

For info, I live in a 3 bedroom, 2 storey semi detached house. Up until very recently we had an old gas-powered heating system located in an upstairs cupboard. Now we have had it replaced with an Alpha condensing boiler system, powering radiators. What would your specialised opinions be on this issue? Is it safe to cover this vent up?

If its not for the boiler is there any gas fires in the room?

Do you have a gas fire in that room if so make and model will determine wether vent req

With your installation at present would say its ok as the boiler you have is room sealed the previous one could have been open flued and required ventilation for combution air. I take you don't have a gas fire in the room where the vent is because if you do you might need the vent, depends on spec of fire.

Thanks for the very speedy replies guys.

I don't have any gas installations in the same room, or in the livingroom off the dining room. I do have a gas hob in the kitchen (next room) but I presume that wouldn't be an issue, as it also has a cooker hood vented to outside.

I think the vent is part of a warm air heating system, I had come across before a lot in council houses. Do you have any more vent in any room?

Are you saying it`s an ex-council house  it might be a mansion

take some pics down it and see what's underneath - we had another one a while ago.
