My daughter has today moved in to a 1930's house, she has found a vent in the living room floor. Does anyone know what this vent would be for. The house doesn't have underfloor heating or warm air ducting.

Vents are for fresh air and to prevent damp and condensation and also required for open fires and gas appliances

Foxhole beat me to it. Unless that gas fire is room-sealed, meaning that it gets its combustion air from outside, it needs an air supply and a floor vent is a good way to provide this - so don't block it.

Having said that my son-in-law cut up his new flooring to install a vent for open gas fire only to be told later the installer got it wrong and it was not needed. So although it should remain it's purpose cannot be certain.
So just because someone is GASsafe does'nt mean they are. ;)
