Hi,

We're in the process of building the constructional hearth for our fireplace and are unsure about damp proofing.

we have damp-proofed the earth/floor with slate and damp-proof membrane, do we need to damp-proof the sides up to the slate damp proof course before we fill in with concrete?

any advice welcome!

Thanks

For damp proof membranes to be fully effective they usually need to turn up and lap into adjacent DPC's. For slabs this usually means leaving enough DPM material around the sides for the membrane to be turned up adjacent walls and into DPC's.

For the hearth you are doing, the details I mentioned above may be unnecessary, even undesirable. If you can, please post a photograph of what you are doing so specific advise can be given.

Hi,

That looks pretty straight forward. As the sides of your hearth will be in contact with the below DPC brickwork I would simply have a membrane that is across the base of the hearth and turned up at the walls. Just trim off any excess after concreting. The slate below the hearth is a nice thought but not really necessary with a membrane unless the slate is bridging a void.
