Hi,

First post here but used this site for a long time for some fantastic information when doing jobs.

Just had some vinyl put down in the bathroom and have a question/concern.

The vinyl was put down on tempered hardboard and the fitters said they'd glued it.

I thought it would be loose laid, or only stuck at the edges, but what concerns me more is I've found the spray adhesive canister they used, (Floorwise F.598), and it explicitly states on the canister "Not suitable for use with Vinyl floorcoverings".

I'm just wondering what potential problems the adhesive might cause, and whether I should be concerned/complain.

Thanks in advance for your thoughts.

You have every right to complain, the problem with that adhesive is it will discolour the vinyl, the chemicals will react with the vinyl, they should have used a spray glue to fix two adjoining edges only, allowing the other two sided expansion/movement There are specialist adhesives that will not react with sheet vinyl.. If the whole vinyl has been fixed in place with this stuff, you will probably find that it will bubble in a few months, and you will never get it flat again.

Thanks for the quick reply crazydaze.

Not sure where I'll get with the shop but will definitely speak to them tomorrow. If there is discolouring or bubbling is it likely to happen within a guarantee period?

I would expect it to occur within the first 12 months, what colour is the vinyl? a dark colour or light? the dark colour is less likely to be affected by the discolouration, as for expansion/bubbling, id expect some movement if we get a half decent summer, if not before, depending on the humidity etc. If they only stuck two sides, you may not have an expansion issue and if it's dark, it may be ok, but it's not normal to fully stick sheet vinyl nowadays.

I think it's probably best that you talk to the shop and see what they say, do you know the brand of the vinyl? They would be happy to supply recommended fitting instructions and confirm the required adhesive types etc.
