Every time I've ever used vinyl tiles, they seem to shrink back, no matter how closely I lay them. Is this just inherent in them, or is there a cure, or is there a solution to the gaps that appear?

You will tend to find this more if the tiles are fitted in the summer or have been acclimatized in a warm room. There is no way to completely prevent it as they will expand and contract according to the ambient temperature of the room they are in. Ideally they should be fitted at around 18-20 c.
