Hi all.
My daughter has moved into a house which has layer upon layer of wallpaper on the hall and stairs. After scraping some of the paper off we've come across fake wood paneling which is made from vinyl panels stuck to the wall with a black tar like adhesive. I seem to remember these being popular in the sixties, seventies and so i reckon they've been there for decades. They are stuck to the wall for a metre or so up and likely a dado rail was there at some time.
While googling them i read about the possibility of asbestos in the adhesive which is one concern. Is there likely to be asbestos in decorative fake wall panels? The other is assuming they are safe to remove getting them off is proving almost impossible. The walls are going to be skimmed and would a plasterer skim over them? I'm guessing not so does anybody have any ideas for removing them preferably without hacking the plaster off as well.
Thanks.

If it's a bitumen product, then there may be a trace of the least harmful type of asbestos. Or there may not.

Put a shovel behind the adhesive and lever them off. The plaster may well come off too.
