so much for that. Seems like a very intermittent fault. I replaced the high limit stat and all seemed fine for a day of use but this evening it's crapped out again with the same symptom. Have emailed a couple of installers so hopefully I'll have a new boiler asap... Thanks for your advice and help everyone.
