Dan - thanks again for this information. Seems from this there are lots of faults that can be discounted...?

The boiler temp gauge is just under 70, pressure around 2. Hot water was running for almost 12 hours without any significant changes. Heat is getting to the kitchen radiator, but is not what I would say is "hot". Curiously, the burner has been off for 24 hours, but there is still heat in the kitchen radiator, and the smaller one in the utility room is not warm, but not as cold as those further down the line.

We're about 5mins from Eurocentral depot...

As DP said the boiler would not ignite with the pump was faulty. Looks like the divertor valve is sticking in the hot water position. There is a service kit to repair this. I think its part no 0858 and costs around £10.00

Speaking as complete novices - is this something we could do ourselves (should we even think about trying)?
And if this would be the case, would it be normal or ususal to see some heat getting to the radiators, if this valve was stuck at hot water...?

It's a job for a GRI or plumber. The valve sticks in the hot water mode for two reasons, Dirt in the two chrome pipes from the water diaphragm housing at the left on the boiler and the valve itself stuck. To check get your plumber to remove the water housing and see if the pin operating the horizontal micro switch at the front/middle retracts into the housing. If it does, there is dirt in the pipes, if not the valve has stuck and needs to be srripped down and service kit fitted. The reason two rads heat, the boiler will fire in hot water mode although there is no water being run and this heat will seep through to the rads

Thanks again GIA - we've relied on the kindness of your advice, and our neighbours who have not only rallied with heaters, but a couple of local numbers to call for professional help. Someone will be here tomorrow, and we can def point them in the directions advised on this thread....

Debbie, would it not make better sense to call in someone who is giving you advise as opposed to picking an unknown from a list? You have already had 'engineers' look at the boiler to suggest repairs that money makers but not fault fixers for your boiler.
