If I want to end up with something like this:

I understood that I need to arrange my pipework similar to this (appreciate the exact measurements will be dependent on the basin I select).

Q. if the waste pipe popping out of the wall is a 32mm pipe or just the elbow, will the silver waste in the first picture slot into this? And the silver grommet type thing will finish everything off nicely. If yes, what happens when the basin or bath is forcefully plunged? Isn't there a risk of dirty water being pushed out of here?

You would have a 32mm solvent to 35mm chrome adapter (if it's european 35mm chrome of course, some of them are) or a 32mm compression to solvent adapter if normal sized pipe and the chrome slots into that, then the shroud just covers the hole in the tile and coupler.

Aha... does that have a rubber grommet which grips the chrome pipe and forms a seal?

Should the end of this be flush with the tiles so the shroud goes over the chrome pipe from the basin waste?

If I had just put an ordinary solvent bend in the wall, how would I slot the chrome waste in if it is 35mm? I know I won’t do this now that you’ve so helpfully advised me!

yep, it's a Mcalpine compression to solvent, the chrome ring is the nut and the seal's the black internal ring.

If I had just put an ordinary solvent bend in the wall, how would I slot the chrome waste in if it is 35mm

a little pipe and then one of these ;)

not sure of the shroud would cover all of that though, you'd probably be easier to need to cut the pipe down in the wall and put a coupler and new piece of pipe in then use the previous elbow

You can also get solvent to pushfit elbows so that the female ring seal is flush with the tiles and the chrome tail pipe (32mm) can be pushed in and the shroud covers the lot.

Or you can use the compression one that @Madrab linked to and set it in the wall/tiles so that the chrome nut is proud of the tiles (and can be rotated) then just silicone or grout it in and do away with the shroud that comes with the trap kit.

Thanks for clearing that up @dilalio.
Does that mean, @Madrab solution (as I’ve come to know it now) would mean that the visible part would be a thick nut (chrome), and then a slimmer sized waste pipe.

Whereas, the push fit would mean a single sized chrome waste being visible?

Have I understood this correctly?

Yes, @dilalio 's solution would mean the chrome pipe would run through the shroud and then fit into the elbow behind it and the connection hidden. Only thing I would say is I don't like push fit, the seals harden and shrink over time and can blow off if you use a pressurised plunger for blockages.

The compression elbow fitting I linked to, you could probably do away with the shroud and just have the chrome piece of the elbow sticking out proud of the tile and then seal it in. That being said, depending on how far back the fitting was within the wall then the shroud may still be able to cover it all.

I had to do 5 basins like this on a recent gut-out and remodel on a posh premises in Belsize Park... I used the mcalpine chrome compression elbows that are linked above, but when the builder had finished the walls and built them out to plumb (level) I had no way of turning the chrome nuts (to "compress" the joint so had to chip away at the tiles and grout to get access onto it, luckily the shroud then covered the lot, which made the cost of the chromed elbow pointless... So next time I'll be using the pushfits and shroud. Just grease up the o ring with silicone grease. (y)

How would you tile and have the chrome compression nut sitting outside the tile (without making the tile hole big enough for the nut to pop through)?

Unless I’m missing something, the push fit seems the only option here?

If this is the case, how forgiving is the push fit when it is set inside the tile hole slightly? Can I still push the chrome waste into it or is it essential that the push fit elbow is flush to the tiles?

Depends on how tight the pipe is to the tile?? If the down pipe is tight to the tile then the compression nut will stick out through the hole. You also need to make sure the waste pipe of your trap is 32mm, if its 35mm then you may have to look again.

You can also get larger shrouds and extended elbows. There's loads of options.
