I want to replace the old wall lights in my kitchen. They currently work independently from the main ceiling light switch and have there own built in switches on the actual lights themselves.
The new lights don't have switches, so I plan to hook the existing mains cable up to new independent switches and then run new cable to the lights from the switch.
My questions are these, is what I'm suggesting OK? and do I have to get a qualified electrician to check my work and give it the OK?

As they are in a kitchen, it would be the best advice to give you to get an electrician to do this, since it is very notifiable to your local building control. What you propose is possible and shouldn't be too much hassle.
