Wall staines

Am doing up four flats that are in really bad condition. One of the ground floor flats was broken into (18 months ago) and the kids had a party in it.

They squirted stuff on the walls, smashed eggs on walls and even the ceiling.

I have scraped and sanded walls but I know I will still get bleed-through if I just emulsion.

Used stain block in another flat which worked well but given the amount of food stuff on ceiling and all four walls, stain block would be an astronomical cost.

Anyone know of a cheaper way of doing it?

There's quite a few options. Firstly look at zinsser range they have several stain blocks to choose from. they have a new product called grade 1 that looks quite good, i think its tintable as well so just a two coat job. Classidur are good as well but pricey although a cheap paint will fail anyway so probably best you spend the money well and do it once.
Other options include lining, wood chip or a blown vinyl but i guess thats not what you're after.

Was talking to a friend a while ago who recommended an oil based undercoat. Also said it could be slightly diluted with white spirit to make it go further.

Given the cost of oil based undercoat, it would be a fraction of the cost of a stain block. But would it really work?

Oil based undercoat works well on most stains but with foodstuffs difficult to say if it will seal it. As Dcdec has said Zinsser. though a bit expensive if your not using it all the time, will cover most things.

Girlfriends teenagers did the same while we were abroad. Food stains everywhere. Got rid of the lot with sugar soap. Painted over with emulsion. No stains anymore.

Sugar soap is a degreaser and will not always get rid of stains that may have penetrated the surface and cant be wiped off. No problem using it first to see if it works.
