I really hate papering window alcoves are there any good cheats to avoid this? (aside from simply painting the walls instead...) the wall i'm looking at papering is on the turn of a u shaped staircase about 5m in height and has a small window part way down...

Windows (can) have architrave around them, partly for this reason.
