Doing up my bathroom. I want to install an LED mirror. Can I "tee-off" an existing supply cable that runs to a light socket? Apologies for asking but the regs are too complex for me to understand to be honest. I need to know if I can do this in a practical sense and also a legal sense.

Thanks in advance. . .

Yes you can, because you are in Scotland and you avoid part p.

However, the spirit of the regs is that you dont do it.

Could you clarify what you mean by light socket?

Is this the the bulb holder in the bathroom?

Thanks for replying.

The cable I want to "tee-off" from is the electrical supply that feeds the light switch. I was hoping to take it from upstream of the light switch, so that the mirror will work independently from the switch, so even if the light is off I can still use the LED mirror.

I was going to use the same cable rating as the one that I was planning to tee-off from.

If this is all okay then what looks a simple job can go ahead.

SO I should be ok then?

You may not be able to do as you plan, as you're assuming there will be a neutral at the light switch, when in the majority of cases there will only be live and switched live. You'll probably need to come from the light fitting itself.

Think u also need to check the power rating of the led mirror, you dnt wana end up burnin the cable out or tripping the fuse. Check the wattage of the mirror.

Even if we ignore the fact that LED lighting powerful enough to overload a lighting circuit would boil your eyes, it's not possible for an overload in a properly designed circuit to cause a cable to burn
