There is a major conflict between the latest update from Microsoft KB951748 and ZoneAlarm.

Any ZoneAlarm user who has Microsoft Updates set to Autoupdate should change te setting to 'Notify me when updates are ready to download' and select the Custon download and install, to deselect KB951748 from the install list.

From ZoneAlarm Forums
We are investigating the issue with the MS update KB951748.
For the time being we suggest you uninstall KB951748 until the issue has been resolved.
We will post when we have more information

Ahhh, that would explain why my connection failed on Tuesday after the monthly update, I disable Zone Alarm at the time and went over to Windows firewall. Since then I have uninstalled zone alarm and have decided to stay with Windows firwall.

Why hae a 3rd party firewall when the windows one works OK, also when you have a NAT router you are fairly well protected anyway, almost to the extent that you don't need a firewall?

Wish I'd read this before having a look at my mate's pc. Still, pretty quickly sorted it anyway - just moved the slider bar for "internet zone security" from high to medium, and it's back working again.

I have had an issue with zonealarm and firefox..s much so that I have shut it down and only switch it on when general surfing.
