Thinking that the very loud noise was coming from a worn pulley wheel, after elimating all other possible causes, I removed the belt and pulley wheel. There was only a slight movement when the wheel was bolted on but after removing the bolts the wheel has a notably slightly more movement when the bolts are removed. More of a waggle if that makes sense. Should the wheel be a tight fit on the spline? I want to be sure before I buy a new wheel.

There shouldn't be any movement between the pully and what it's attached to.

Noise is more likely worn bearings, in which case it's time to buy a new washing machine.

with the pully off so the drum can spin freely, turn the drum as fast as you can via the open door, it should be almost silent.

Also move the drum up, dow, left and right, how much movent is there ? any ticking?
