Do washing machines usually run on cold water except at high temp. settings when they run on hot. Is this so?
Is the plastic Y fitting usually used to connect the hot and the cold supplies when there is only a single male terminal on the appliance or when the instructions call for it?

a w/m takes in both H & C on inital fill, this is to save time so it does not have to heat all the water to set temp (water will be warmish as it filled with H & C)

the H also brings in the soap powder, being H helps it to dissolve better

C, is used for the rinses

as mentioned the powder is brought in by the H, so if you only have a C supply you use a Y connector to go to the H to bring in the powder.

the conditioner is also brought in by C but a 3rd valve
