Watch out, Glitter's about!

I wonder if there are conditions to his release e.g. stay in UK, register at police station weekly/monthly, that sort of thing.

An assistant of his took the laptop into PC World as Glitter had casually mentioned it being faulty, it was booked in under her name & there was nothing to ID it as belonging to Glitter. He knew what was on that laptop & there's no way he would've dropped it off for repair without scrubbing it, so off he trots to the store to get it back. Glitter is an instantly identifiable character.

It had already been overnighted to the PCW repair workshop, where it was sat on a shelf when the call came in from the store that it was Gary Glitters laptop & he wanted it back ASAP even if unrepaired. So, of course, the young chap who took the call instantly booted it up & took a look inside . . . .

Finding porn or 'other' things illegal, grossly offensive or indecent on customers HDD's was not at all unusual in that environment & there was an unwritten rule to not get involved, to move on & ignore it as best you can. There are VERY important business reasons for this so breaking that "unwritten" rule was seriously frowned upon.

What he saw in those photo's deeply troubled him so he called over his supervisor who happened to be an ex-copper. Quite by accident I just happened to be visiting the location that day & this supervisor came to find me, specifically bypassing the several layers of management at that location, he knew all about the unwritten rule but reckoned this needed special attention. He took me to view the photo's & I immediately said "if you don't make the call I will".

Things then kicked off. Glitter was 'invited' to collect his laptop from the store a few days later & most of the rest is history.

I could still get into a lot of trouble for this all these years later, but I was told discreetly that the 2x chaps in the workshop were to be 'managed out'. I made it my business that they weren't & that they couldn't be without serious consequences.

So you see, I really was quite senior in PCW, working for & employed directly under Sir Stanley Kalms. or 'Stan' as no one ever called him.

Incidentally, I was also sent a copy of 'the list' which kicked off Operation Ore. Scotland Yard had this list for months with (seemingly) no action, so the FBI distributed it to a few folk to cause them serious embarrassment. I still have a copy of that list, kept very safe, which still has many traceable 'names' where no action was taken. The list is considered to be a very accurate list of those using a certain website from here in the UK & is not just credit card details.

One of his regularly gets played, but poss unknowingly or by accident. Often people chuck on an Xmas compilation and Rock 'n' Roll Christmas can be heard. Usually happens in shops, even Asda a few years ago. Poss younger people responsible who don't know who the singer is or his infamy. Shame really, because it was one of the better Xmas hits.

Been to a couple of his more recent concerts in 90s, when he was relaunching himself, clawing his way back from bankruptcy and doing quite well. Saw him at Bristol Student Union, then he worked up to The Newport Centre and even NEC. Making quite a good living out of it until the PCW incident brought it all crashing down. Was a bit cheesy, but he was quite a showman.

Michael Jackson was a musical genius with talent by the bucket load where as Glitter was a load of old crap in comparison so apparently when the talent is strong a bit of paedophilia can be overlooked. I have some MJ music in the car, my kids like it, so be it.

I would like to think businesses no longer operate under such unwritten rules/policies unless the stuff is just everyday run-of-the-mill adult material featuring people that are obviously adults.

I'm not saying anything sexual happened until later (tbh I'm too lazy to try and find out) but when Elvis first became involved with Priscilla she was 14 and he was 24. I get the fact it was decades ago and I'm not saying he was what we'd class as a pedophile, even so I do think there have been age gap relationships over the years that have involved celebs that would be seriously frowned upon if the person wasn't famous.

Bill wyman and his mrs mandy all over the papers from when she was 13

Where do you draw the line tho'?

PCW's attitude was that a reputation for reporting its own customers for a bit of tit's n bum action would mean everyone goes elsewhere to buy their computers . . . . . The original "Jolly Rogers Anarchists Cookbook" was very commonly found on HDD's in those days, today you'd 'have' to report that as a very serious matter, but back then you'd probably be reporting a curious 14yr old boy.
