A few days ago, whilst nailing down new hardboard on to wooden floors, the workmen punctured a water pipe...three hours later water was still pouring down the walls and through the ceiling. We had the puncture repaired but 5 days later the walls are still wet... could there be water sitting in the ceiling? We can't turn on the lights to the hall, stairs and landing because water is coming through the light fitting in slow drips...tried to dry the holder with a hairdryer but still getting drips. Thank you kindly in advance for any advice or suggestions provided.

The walls may take some time to dry but if you still have water dripping through the ceiling, I would be having the boards lifted and taking another look, rather than waiting for they ceiling to fall in.
The builders should be insured for this damage.

you should also inform your own insurance company.

the floor fitters doubtless want to minimise their costs, but they are responsible for repairing the pipe, drying out your house, and redecorating the affected ceiling and walls. Furthermore, the space under the floor needs to be opened up by removing floor covering and floorboards to allow air to circulate, otherwise you will get mould, long-term dampness and possibly rot. Also look at the downstairs floor that water got to.

the other way to do it is to take the ceiling down so air can circulate.

Your own insurers will (should be able to) engage a local firm of approved builders from their panel, and hire a dehumidifier to speed up the drying. Insurance companies are very used to dealing with water leaks, and paying foropening up, drying out, redecorating and replacing flooring.

BTW you have just discovered one of the reasons why plumbers and electricians don't like laminated flooring "you can't take a floorboard up to do the repair, we've just had it done".

If the floor fitting company are reluctant or slow to do the job right, ask your own household insurance company to deal with it and reclaim the costs from the floorers.

You need this done straight away.
