Water Meter

Does anyone know the legalities of someone moving their own water meter. Ours is located in our downstairs bathroom. I'm about to fit a new bathroom suite and the meter is in the way. I only want to move it a couple of feet. It doesn't look to be a big job, and I'm guessing in the eyes of the water board as long as it stays in the same rough area they will never know.

I don't want to pay through the nose and have to wait for them to fit me in for a 2 minute job that I would rather do myself!

Works need to be checked by water board so as to ensure by pass of meter etc has not been done, failure WILL result in prosecution. Up to £1000.00 fine I believe!!!!
