Looking to install a water softener, anyone got any opinions on good value for money one?

OMHO, a water softener is a luxury item - none of them is value for money.

Some people (who have water softeners) will regail you with tales of a scale-free existence, of lower maintenance costs for heating elements and other components, of the opulent feeling that accompanies every bubble bath, and reduced soap bills.

That might all be true, but you still have to buy the thing, and feed it salt, and have it serviced and maintained, and mop the surrounding area when it poops itself.

yep, that's me, they're wonderful, I wouldn't be without it.

Mine has never weed on the floor, but twice (in 20+ years of using them) the valve jammed. The overflow pipe into the drain prevents it leaking on the floor.

So I had it serviced, and some new "O" rings and piston had it working fine again. My first one needed servicing (repair) on average at 10-year intervals. The second time I didn't bother with repair, but bought a recon one with new moving parts and resin. The old one was 20 years old by then and had failed twice.

My two have been Permutit and top quality, but my local company tells me they went bust and the name was bought up by a company which trades on the brand reputation but sells poorer-quality machines.

In your position, I'd either find a well-established local company that does sales, service and salt delivery, and buy one they recommend; or buy a cheap one in the sheds, and throw it away when it breaks. Depends if you want to buy cheap or not.

p.s. I have reason to believe that Softus does not have long, soft, silky hair, which soft water is very good for

Thats fine softus but i am fed up with hard water, fitting a nice bathroom and now finding limescale growing all over the place, sick to death of it, so now fitting a new kitchen and am going to get one, just don't want to buy crap.

Fair play swampydrill. In that case you could do a lot worse than to follow JohnD's advice. And that applies to a great many things. ;)
