Water softners / water conditioners / scale reducers

Fellow DIYers / expert plumbers.

I need to purchase a device that softens water and or removes scale. I understand there are water softeners, however I understand that there are also water conditioners and Digital scale reducers.

I require something with small physical dimensions (no more than say a box of chocolates) and is relatively low in cost (under £100). I understand this puts a water softener out of the running.

I have been advised that the so called magnetic type are largely ineffective, however there are devices on the market that work electronically.

I understand I have not provided much information, but some guidance on where to start would be great!!!
