water stains on the ceiling

My artexed (ugh!!!) kitchen ceiling has some brown water stains on it. I have tried emulsioning over them but they keep coming back. what can I do?? Thanks in advance

Paint over with a mixture of PVA & water. Let dry then repaint.

One would assume that you have stopped the cause of the water marks first though.....

Oil based undercoat...works everytime.

Dont use anything waterbased a water based stain may/will bleed through it.....in the same way as an oil based stain will bleed through oil.

There is an old fable about using gloss....dont!.....emulsion doesnt adhere very well to it.

You can buy stain blockers but whats the point when a dip in a pot of undercoat will do....most of us in the trade still use undercoat.

Failing that.....white wood primer, plaster primer (not stabiliser) alkali resisting primer....anything oil based.

If your really stuck....knotting...but bear in mind it will take a fe coats to cover the brown.....unless you have white styptic knotting
