My house drainage is into a cess pit. My WC cistern has a Siamp flushing system. So any overflows go into the pan rather than through a pipe to the outside. There is no hole in the cistern for a pipe. Two things could go wrong:

1. The outlet flushing button could stick which is easily fixed
2. The inlet valve could also stick which if not noticed before leaving the house could cause the cess pit to prematurely fiĺl up and backup into the house resulting in a flood.

If the inlet valve made a noise you could tell it had closed. Mine makes very little noise.

I suppose I could change my cistern but has anyone got any other ideas?

All modern loos are like this now, if the inlet valve fails/passes water, it will just run into the pan.
That how it is .

Your septic tank should be able to handle quite a volume of water.....maybe you should check that the outfalls are performing?
After all, there's a large volume of water when you run a bath!
