I am putting a tall, lockable wooden gate in my garden wall and will put a sort of lintel over the top to give some weather protection. A pitched lychgate would not look right but I can put a slight slope on it. I have maybe 6 inches between the top of the gate and the top of the wall. It is a 9" wall about 2m high.

If I use lead, it will get stolen. What can I use that will last well?

The house has synthetic slates, if that helps, and the wall is redbrick.

Flashband can be used but it doesn't look too great.

There are also a range of substitute lead flashings - but its hard to prescribe without seeing a pic.

From your description you might only need a short length - given the substitute stuff is surprisingly expensive, if you have contact with a plumber or roofer they might have a suitable off-cut.

no picture - I haven't even cut the hole in the wall yet

I am toying with a slightly pitched roof, but only about 9" wide, or possibly a single, slightly sloping, slab of ply.

What about pinning drip caps/angle fillets on both sides of the wall and flashing them in with the lead substitute - like peaked hood mouldings above a church door/window?

I don't know what peaked hood mouldings are like, but it will need some kind of roof/lintel. The wall will not pass over the door ( I measured it yesterday, it is about 5' 8" on the garden side, and about 6' on the road side. I thought from the plans it was 2m when built but perhaps the pavement was laid later, or I am mistaken.

I can dig out the garden a bit to match the road level and put down a paving slab.

edit
the central roof detail on this?
