I have a weird damp patch in my hallway and the constant sound of water running underneath. When I turn the water off at the mains it still carries on?
It sounds like a fast running stream underneath the floorboards.
I would call the landlord but seeing as he wont even send me a signed copy of my tenancy agreement so I can claim some housing benefit while I'm temporarily unemployed I really couldn't give a toss. It's been like this for a few weeks, just wondering if anyone had any ideas like?

Presumably you have a Landlord's Gas Safety Record too then? He must have one and you are entitled to a copy if you have any gas.
Your pipe, is either your water main, (unless you turned it off in the street), your neighbour's, or maybe an open sewer :D .

Landlords usually wake up if they think their property is in danger.

So I am guessing a little here but I can see the following scenario

Water supply comes from front of property passes under hallway and to the back of the house probably the kitchen where you isolated the water to the rest of the house.

Its a probabilty rather than a possibility that the water is leaking from the pipework on the other side of the stoptap ie the bit that runs under your hallway. This needs to be turned off at the boundary stoptap or mains in the street for further investigation. I would say its in your interests not to touch any of it. However if your hallway has a wooden floor then you could take up a floorboard or two just to have a look.

If your landlord won't do anything about it then get on to the council. They should have a department that will be able to advise you on this and the issue of not having a tenancy agreement.

You couldn`t give a toss........then let it run and undermine the *******`s house footings

You were spot on Slug - it was a leak on the pipe from the street into the house - anyway I got a plumber in and he fixed in an hour. He also fitted a cut off under the floorboards because the council had poured concrete down the access hole in the street! wtf!! Unfortunately the plumber didn't have time to fix my leaky toilet - I might have a go at doing this myself after doing a search on this site.
