Do your course first & learn about the different types of welding machines there are. You will be in a better position to decide whether you want MIG/TIG or an arc welder then

I've never had any training on the subject. I started out with a cheap "buzzbox" arc welder, like the lidl one. The best thing I ever did was to buy an inverter arc welder, it's like night and day.

Arc welders are no good for bodywork but they're ideal for diy use as they're pretty basic, and you don't need gas.

All depends on what and where you are welding as to which welder is best (if that makes sense!).
