What’s this valve for!?

Soo I’m looking at changing the solenoid on my three way valve (hence it’s not on in the picture) but looking at the system I cannot work out what the branch offtake between the pump and the three way valve is? Take a look at the pic

Bypass into an air separator, bet that’s not blocked!
Ok so should the valve be open or closed during normal operation... bypass makes it sound like it should be closed... but didn’t the system need an air separator all the time??
 
The leg from the gate valve doesn't go into the top of the airsep- I thought it did as well & that would make no sense at all but it drops just behind the top tube coming out of the airsep (which presumably goes to the vent). Almost certainly paupers bypass. I fitted one of those air separators- whether it did any good or not I have no idea but system ran fine for 28 years.
