What distance do you need in front of a WC?

We are gutting our old and hideous primrose yellow 1970s bathroom. The bathroom suppliers have suggested moving things around so we can fit in a separate shower cubicle too. Everything looks fine, but it does mean that we would end up with a distance of only 435mm between the WC and the edge of the bath - I know that it's a bit tight, but would it be completely daft and unworkable?

No. If you had a wall 435mm away then you'd struggle, because you need the room to lean forward to get up, but if it's only a bath then you'll be OK.

You can simulate the effect by getting positioning a short barrier, i.e. at bath height, in front of your existing toilet, at the proposed distance, and seeing how you get on with it there.

Good suggestion; thanks. We've done the pieces of paper on the floor thing, but it's hard to tell in 2d what things will really be like in 3d! ;)

435mm sounds very tight! The usual recommendation is at least 700mm in front of a basin or WC, and 1000mm in front of a bath. These 'activity spaces' can all overlap, of course.

If it's that close to a bath, best to check it doesn't impede that as well. As Softus has said, stack a few boxes or suitcases etc. around the room to get a feel for the new spaces, and see if it will work for you.
