Ive seen lots of stud shower walls affected by damp, which has dislogded tiles etc. But in all these cases there has been another cause for the problem - such as a broken tile, lose tray, leak from fitting inside the partition etc, and more often than not its the fault of the homeowner not dealing with the probelm early on
I've never seen a plaster stud become damaged purely as a result of water from showering penetrating the grout.
I'd acknowledge that a cement board is less likely to be damaged by a prolonged leak, but the fact remains that cement board is not a pre-requisite and plasterbard will do fine
