What do they call them thingies?

You know the ones.

They are used for temporary connecting wires to the mains, mainly for when you are bench testing stuff.

They have 3 spring loaded terminals for the LNE connections, and a lid that closes over them and engages the fuse so you can not accidentally connect to it whilst it is live.

It also has a neon in the middle of the lid to warn you it is live.

If anyone knows what I'm banging on about I'll be amazed

I've always known them as a safeblock too, or unsafe block whichever way you look at it

The only hazard was relying on the cover to stay open when working on the equipment powered by the safe block ( Or Big Crocky as a friend called his one ). A careless move on a crowed bench and the cover fell into the shut position switching on the equipment when not wanted to be switched on. Then Big Crocky had a vicious bite.....

It would have been easy to have made them with a prop or other device the ensure the lid could not fall shut by itself.

we used to have 2 of them screwed to the desk for doing 3 phase..
1 had the neutral and earth in it along with a single phase, the other the 3 phases.. ( so we had 2 red phases available )

we rigged a spring loaded wooden dowel that went across both of them with the 3 phase cleared last so that you had to make the neutral and earth one first

there was also a 3 phase isolator next to them for added safety..

He said temporary. Matchsticks are good for 5 years or more, more if they are swan rated.

Socket manufacturers helpfully make their sockets more suitable for matchsticks with matchstick holders.

Just use a screwdriver in the earth pin socket and the matchstick holders of the current pins open. They close and hold the matchsticks tight when you remove the screwdriver.
